Jackets vs. Panthers Football Recap
September 7, 2016
It’s a 70 degree Friday night. The grass is cut, field is painted and the stands are filled. It’s the Clinton vs. Heber game, Battle of The Little Red, with a trophy on the line. This is the game situation every high school football player wants to be in. Heber won the toss and got the ball. Clinton stops Heber on the 30 and here comes that grueling Clinton defense. After a good run on first down, Clinton shuts it down and Heber goes 3 and out. Nate Lonnon collects the punt around Heber’s 30 yard line and gets to the 33 yard line before he is taken down. QB Kort Weaver and the Clinton offense are in business, and after 7 quick running plays from the seniors Jake Ferrell, Wyatt McCoy, Dalton Hoyle, and Kort Weaver. The drive is capped off with a 3-yd QB keeper from Weaver and Jonathan “The Leg” Ochoa kicks an extra point to put Clinton up by 7. After a long Heber drive they tack up 7 points to tie the game. The rest of the first half was a complete defensive battle both offenses not really getting anywhere. The Clinton Yellowjackets go into halftime with momentum on their side after the Arkansas First Bank and Trust player of the game puts a bone-crushing (but legal) hit on a Heber player to end the half, pumping up the Clinton sideline and stands. After a fumble by Clinton on the kickoff, Heber has good field position and takes it down and scores to put them up opening the half. That explosive Clinton offense that takes it right back downfield on a long drive capped off by a Wyatt McCoy 4-yd touchdown. Yellowjacket defense get a big stop on third down to give the offense the ball back. Offense drives for a bit then has to punt, but catch a big break when Heber gets a roughing the kicker penalty. Then Weaver drives his offense down to the red zone and Jake Ferrell pounds it into the end zone for a Yellowjacket touchdown and a 2-pt conversion by Sky Davidson putting Clinton back on top 21-14. Heber gets the ball back and a blown coverage by Clinton leads to a long TD by Heber but a failed 2-pt conversion from a Danny Bittle sack. That sets it at 21-20 with Clinton in the lead. A 70-yd touchdown run on the first play of the drive by Jake Ferrell and an extra point puts Clinton up 28-20. After a sack then tackle both by Cort Bagley and a Sky Davidson, Clinton emerges victorious, winning the Battle of the Little Red and bringing the trophy home for our hometown.
